Excerpt:
The morning held its breath as a black motorcar chugged to a stop at the curb in front of the pier. The driver got out and opened the back door. As the crowd surged forward, police spread their arms to keep the onlookers back, and two German men in long black coats and top hats climbed out of the back seat. The temperature had dipped below 20 degrees overnight and had only crept up a few degrees since sunrise. Louisa, Ellen, and Carlotta, bundled in coats and scarves, watched Captains von Papen and Boy-Ed stride toward the pier where the steamship Noordam waited.
“It would be unfortunate if their ship caught fire in the middle of the ocean,” Louisa said, thinking of all the men who had drowned in the unforgiving sea because of the Germans’ sabotage.
“I have no doubt those two hooligans will continue to cause mayhem wherever they go,” Ellen said.
