Louisa took a closer look at the body. The hands were balled into fists, and the mouth formed a grimace. She sniffed the air, but there was no bitter almond odor. She’d seen a man die of poisoning and that smell had been the giveaway. Still, it was odd how contracted his muscles seemed to be as if he’d fought with death till the last minute.

A whimpering sound came from somewhere. Louisa glanced around the room which was three times the length of a normal stateroom and saw, huddled on the large bed against a velvet curtained window, an Asian girl, no older than fifteen, wearing a red peignoir. She looked utterly bewildered and distraught.

Oh dear God is right, Louisa thought, staring into the girl’s dark, frightened eyes.
